Dr Shehu Bawa, Director, Veterinary services in the state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Saturday that of the figure, 420 are cattle.Bawa said 1, 750 are sheep and goats while 75 are camels.“If we go by the slaughter register no fewer than 2, 245 animals comprising cattle, sheep/goats and camels are beingslaughtered daily in Kano Municipality,” he said.Bawa said the abattoirs include the main abattoir located in Bachirawa in Ungoggo Local Government Area, Unguwa Uku in Tarauni Local Government and Tudun Wada in Nasarawa local government area.

He, however, expressed concern over the inadequate number of Veterinary doctors who were supposed to ascertain the health status of the animals before being slaughtered.“We really need more veterinary personnel who will inspect the animals and certify whether it is fit for human consumption or not,”he said. The Director urged the state government to employ more veterinary doctors and other personnel to ensure effective meat inspection at the abattoirs before being transported to markets.
